New Jersey (County) (DC Comics)

New Jersey (i/nuː ˈdʒɜrzi/) is a state in the Northeastern and Middle Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by the U.S. state of New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania, and on the southwest by Delaware. New Jersey is the 4th least extensive, but the 11th most populous and the most densely populated of the 50 United States. New Jersey lies mostly within the sprawling metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia. It is also the third wealthiest by 2009–2010 median household income.[7]
The area was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements.[8] The British later seized control of the region,[9] naming it the Province of New Jersey. It was granted as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. At this time, it was named after the largest of the British Channel Islands, Jersey, Carteret's birthplace.[10] New Jersey was the site of several decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War.
In the 19th century, factories in cities such as Elizabeth, Paterson, and Trenton helped to drive the Industrial Revolution. New Jersey's position at the center of the Northeast megalopolis, between Boston and New York City to the northeast, and Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. to the southwest, fueled its rapid growth through the process of suburbanization in the 1950s and beyond.

Points of Interest

Clay Banks

Clay Banks is a small New Jersey neighborhood and the former headquarters of the criminal known as the Hooded Hunchback. In 1942, Starman unveiled a plot to murder the heirs to the Hetty Taylor fortune and traced the crime back to the Hooded Hunchback's tower. [2]

Newark City College

Newark City College is the alma mater of former athlete turned Cyborg Victor Stone.[citation needed]

New Jersey Palisades

The New Jersey Palisades are a line of steep cliffs along the west side of the lower Hudson River in northeast New Jersey and southern New York in the United States. The Fearsome Five once maintained their headquarters in a cave along the cliffs.[citation needed]

Gotham City

Gotham City is conterminous with the gambling resort Atlantic City and the greater Atlantic County area. However unlike the real Atlantic City, Gotham maintains its own subway system. During the "Knightfall" saga, the Joker and the Scarecrow once escaped the clutches of Batman (Jean-Paul Valley) by hiding inside one of South Jersey's most venerable landmarks - Lucy the Elephant.

Hoboken is a city in Hudson County, New Jersey. Hoboken lies on the west bank of the Hudson River across from the Manhattan, New York City neighborhoods of the West Village and Chelsea between Weehawken Cove and Union City at the north and Jersey City at the south and west. Hoboken is the former base of operations for Doctor Will Magnus, the original Matches Malone (before Batman assumed his identity) and former Blackhawk Squadron pilot Carlos Sirianni.[citation needed]

Princeton is home to Princeton University, one of the finer institutes of higher learning and the alma mater of a few of the world's heroes.[3]
