History

The story begins as dozens of missiles simultaneously strike the Earth. The members of the Justice League of America independently fail to rescue humanity. Throughout the sequence, an unseen narrator laments the human race's idolization of and reliance on superheroes which has led to the destruction of Earth and all of its inhabitants except Superman, who flies into space at the last moment. The sequence is revealed to be a nightmare shared by several supervillains.

The story shifts to Aquaman who, after his own sleepless night, reveals to his wife Mera that he senses the presence of something in the oceans that does not belong there. A school of sharks arrive and lead him to the object, a massive city-sized black sphere. Aquaman is attacked by Black Manta and his henchmen and rendered unconscious. Aquaman is conveyed into the sphere and delivered to Lex Luthor, who is revealed as the issue's narrator.

Riddler and his henchmen are in Wayne Tower, using the powerful computers to hack into Batman's network. The building's surveillance system identifies the presence of Bruce Wayne in the building. As Riddler completes the transfer of the computer files onto a removable disk, the security system informes the villains that Wayne has stopped outside their door. However, when the door opens, Batman greets the villains instead.

Riddler and his men dash from the building into a van; Batman follows in the Batmobile. He receives a call from Red Tornado, informing him that Aquaman is still missing. Batman stops Riddler's van and pursues him to a club called the Batcave. The two trade blows before the villain's associates grab Batman. However, in a bar named for Batman, he has many allies. The Riddler unleashes a torrent of light and question marks and escapes; Batman gathers a few clues, and leaves.

Elsewhere Jonathan Crane (aka the Scarecrow) is seen administering an injection to a sickly girl, who miraculously walks again. Flash runs to a desert which has been revitalized. The inhabitants inform him that a man arrived with a gun that first made ice, and that the ice became the sea. Flash wonders what Captain Cold could be up to. Elsewhere, Poison Ivy commands a huge stalk to grow, providing an entire city with much-needed food.

Batman trails Riddler to the cemetery, armed with heat goggles that make him immune to Riddler's hologram technology. He attacks Riddler again, finally besting the villain and demanding the disk. As Batman holds him, the Riddler begins to strangle himself. Finally, he releases his grip and asks what's wrong with him. Back in the Batcave, Batman tells Alfred that he is very concerned that the Riddler had his hands on the disk's information. In Arkham, Riddler interacts with the Joker, who has heard about the apocalyptic dreams the others are having, and he wants to be involved in the grand scheme.

Elsewhere, Aquaman lies strapped to a table; he is to be subject to experiments. Brainiac appears bearing a scalpel, informing Aquaman that he wants to get inside his head.

Martian Manhunter searches the world for Aquaman. Transforming into a dolphin, he tracks Arthur though the ocean. Elsewhere in the world, the Toyman develops prosthetic limbs for people in need. News reports confirm that many villains are helping to solve the world's problems. J'onn locates the structure that Aquaman located and finds a deserted city; a psychic attack sends him reeling. As J'onn falls to the ground images of a burning Mars fill his mind; he has been attacked by Gorilla Grodd. At a UN conference convened by Wonder Woman, Cheetah sneaks in and prepares for her attack.

In Arkham, Joker demands that Riddler tell him what is going on, but Riddler informs him that the plotters do not want him involved. Luthor teleports into Riddler's cell, and the two escape. Joker shouts that he only stays in Arkham as long as it's funny, and it's not funny anymore.

At the JLA satellite, Red Tornado sees that someone has teleported onto the satellite. Suddenly, the android begins to tear himself to pieces. Grodd tells his allies that he has taken the secrets the satellite held, and he now knows the identity of all the Leaguers. Luthor announces that it's time to make a statement about the good things they have been doing for humanity.

Grodd tells his allies that he has taken the secrets the satellite held, and he now knows the identity of all the Leaguers. Luthor announces that it's time to make a statement about the good things they have been doing for humanity.
Elongated Man suspects something is wrong; the world's supervillains are serving humanitarian causes and no one from the Justice League is responding to their allegations (or answering his calls). Martian Manhunter frees himself from Gorilla Grodd's psychic assault and realizes that the League faces a unified conspiracy. Brainiac and Lex Luthor acknowledge a mutual professional enmity, but agree to work together nonetheless. Brainiac hands Luthor several small spheres.

The Atom is in the hospital with Jean Loring at his side. Black Canary, seeing a fear-induced hallucination of Green Arrow lying dead, screams (with her Canary Cry); the two drive off Clayface and the Scarecrow. During her struggle with Wonder Woman, the Cheetah slashes Diana's face, arms, and body with her claws; although Wonder Woman nearly subdues her foe, the villainess manages to escape. Green Lantern is lost in a space void, with his ring providing him life-support. Hawkman and Hawkgirl survive Toyman's attack.

Superman is rescued by Captain Marvel and the two travel to the Batcave for help, but Batman and Alfred, under the control of microscopic mechanical worms, attack them. Elsewhere, Luthor realizes that Brainiac plans to betray him, just as he will betray Brainiac — and throws the small orbs he has been given into the ocean. The orbs enlarge and become the model cities.

Superman realizes that he too is infected with the mind worms, and instructs Captain Marvel to throw him into the sun to burn them out of his body.
Captain Marvel throws Superman into the Sun. Giganta tries to finish off Ray Palmer in the hospital, but Jean Loring has brought his shrink technology, and he escapes. Hal Jordan's ring converts him to pure energy and transports him inside the ring itself; he is placed in a simulacrum of Coast City. Martian Manhunter heads to Superman's Fortress of Solitude to rendezvous with the other League members, and Hawkman and Hawkwoman investigate Toyman.

Gorilla Grodd remarks to Brainiac and Luthor that he has no mental sense of Superman, and that the Man of Steel may be dead. Luthor is dubious; Brainiac seems nonplussed by Captain Marvel's inclusion in their calculations. Grodd recommends sending "the dream" to Black Adam. Elsewhere, Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) administers eye treatment to one of many patients waiting to enter one of the new cities. Meanwhile, Vicki Vale comments on television about the villains' benvolence, and the absence of the Justice League.

In disguise, the Joker lines up to enter one of the cities. Superman bursts out of the Sun, freed of the mind worms' control, while Wonder Woman heads to the Batcave. She finds it has been taken over by Poison Ivy. Batman, incapacitated by the mind worms, is freed of the control when Wonder Woman binds him in her Lasso of Truth. Meawhile, Hawkman and Hawkwoman find Toyman's warehouse, are assaulted by his forces, and discover that he is making multiple Brainiac androids. In the Batcave, Grodd takes mental control of Alfred, who threatens Batman and Wonder Woman. At Ferris Air, John Stewart inquires about Hal's whereabouts; no one has any leads. Superman and Captain Marvel arrive at the satellite just as it explodes. They initiate a vain search for the Red Tornado.

Elsewhere, Zatanna joins Will Magnus, who is repairing the Red Tornado; the Metal Men look on anxiously. Red Tornado comes back online and reveals that Aquaman is in Argentina.

Across the ocean, the Flash cannot stop running.
With Green Lantern out of the way, Brainiac advances his plan! The Justice League meets in the Fortress to reconnoiter…and enlist the aid of Metamorpho and the Doom Patrol!

Zatanna and J'onn J'onzz continue their search for Aquaman, ultimately finding him unconscious in a warehouse. Brainiac watches, using holograms to communicate with Lex Luthor and Grodd in another facility. The villains, using the information gained about the friends and companions of the Justice Leaguers, intend to capture them all.

In the subway station in Fawcett City, Freddy Freeman and Mary Batson look for Captain Marvel, while Solomon Grundy spies on Dick Grayson and Wally West. Batman instructs Diana to keep the lasso around him, in order to fend off the mind control. The two head to the Fortress of Solitude in Wonder Woman's invisible plane.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl fight a large Brainiac robot army. In order to help Barry to stop running, Superman and Captain Marvel combine forces: Captain Marvel utters the word "Shazam!" and the resulting lightning bolt drives Barry off-balance and Superman catches him just after he catches Billy and throws the boy into the air so he can safely transform back into the Captain to rejoin his comrades. In the interim Aqualad, Jimmy, Lois, Wally West, and Dick Grayson are all captured, while Hal Jordan, trapped inside his ring, relives how he broke off his engagement with Carol Ferris. The ring informs Hal that he will live forever in his present stasis, alone and trapped.

In Shazam's cave, Black Adam grabs Mary and covers her mouth so she cannot utter the magic word, and threatens to kill her if Freddy utters his magic phrase ("Captain Marvel!").

The superheroes rally at the Fortress of Solitude. They share information and learn how the supervillains learned of their secret identities and those of their loved ones. Zatanna and J'onn J'onzz call upon Niles Caulder and the Doom Patrol to help nurse Aquaman back to health. Brainiac has cut out the part of Aquaman's brain that controls his telepatic abilities, perhaps in a bid to enhance Grodd's own. Caulder informs the concerned heroes that their comrade's special anatomy is healing itself. Caulder has Aquaman placed in a special tank designed to enhance his natural healing factor.

At the close of the issue a mind-controlled Aqualad tears Aquaman's son from Mera's arms and turns him over to Black Manta.
Outside the Fortress of Solitude, Batman and Superman discuss the dichotomy between Metropolis and Gotham City, and the effectiveness of the villains' coordinated attacks. Superman leaves the Dark Knight and flies above the Earth to a stationary orbit; observing the villains' floating cities, he recognizes Brainiac's hand in their construction.

The Flash confronts Captain Cold in Africa and apprehends him after a brief skirmish. He brings Cold to the Fortress, where Batman intimidates Cold into talking about what he knows.

Ray Palmer is told about Brainiac's plan: mind-control worms have been miniaturized by Brainiac so that they can infiltrate the human body.

Batman alerts the other Leaguers to what Captain Cold told him:

"The villains who have been attacking us have had the same recurring nightmare, a vision of the end. They have not questioned its origins, believing only that their shared experience somehow makes the dream true [...] They dream that we all fail to save anyone, including ourselves. If anything this world's trust in the Justice League was its undoing. And so, our enemies have formed an alliance to either stop the coming end of life, or prepare a remnant of humanity to survive it."

The Joker, disguised as a preacher, enters one of the cities unnoticed.

In Metropolis, Luthor oversees Supergirl's kidnapping at the hands of the Parasite. The Scarecrow and Clayface kidnap Batgirl. In the world generated by his ring, the young Hal Jordan is confronted by the Phantom Stranger and brought to the Fortress. Wonder Woman reveals to Captain Marvel that the wounds she incurred in her battle with Cheetah continue to damage her from within and will eventually destroy her.

Mera arrives and informs Aquaman that Aqualad spirited away their son and handed him over to Black Manta; Aquaman vows to kill Brainiac. Red Tornado alerts the League that their loved ones (including Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane) have all been kidnapped.
Hal Jordan shares his suspicions with the League at the Fortress. Hal presumes that Brainiac never wanted him dead, aiming only to keep the ring off Earth. Examining Captain Cold, Hal discovers miniaturized mind-control worms in his brain. Captain Marvel remarks that the villains were never loyal to each other, so the worms may be the only thing keeping them together.

Doc Magnus discovers that although the worms can penetrate armor and clothing, they can be repelled by Green Lantern's forcefield. Magnus proposes building special armor, scavenging his Metal Men for raw materials and their responsometers. Ray Palmer starts building non-sentient suits with Thanagarian and Atlantean materials for the leaguers.

The League tracks Gorilla Grodd to an African stronghold; Grodd is bearing a Qwardian ring. Black Adam, Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr. fight Captain Marvel. Using Billy's feelings for his sister and his protegé against him, Adam manages to bring him under Brainiac's control.

Bruce Wayne brings Clark Kent to Leslie Thompkins' foster care home. There he examines a child "healed" by Brainac, discovering that Brainiac has gained the ability to reshape humans into organic machinery.

Luthor inspects an army of Brainiac's lookalikes, built by the Toyman, and plants a hidden bug into one of them.

The battle with Gorilla Grodd ends in a standstill, with Sinestro coming to aid of his wounded teammate. Metamorpho manages to steal Grodd's Power Ring before his escape.

A mind-controlled Captain Marvel tries to breach the fortress, but is stopped by Superman and Green Lantern. The latter frees him from Brainiac's worms. They take off for Arkham, where they find Doctor Sivana, in a catatonic state induced by the worms. After freeing him, they discover that the worms are in fact Sivana's doing, reshaped and miniaturized by Brainac.

As the heroes set off for their battle, clad in armor, Luthor frees Captain Cold.
The villains celebrate their victory; Brainiac, deploying Arthur Jr., hopes to restore Colu's glory on Earth. The world hails them as heroes.

The League storms into the villains' base. Green Arrow and Black Canary escape into the vent system, leaving behind their Metal Men controlled shells as decoys, while the Doom Patrol deals with the mind-controlled Teen Titans and Supergirl. Gold and Tina sacrifice themselves to stop Metallo and the Parasite. Ralph Dibny, in the ventillation system, does the same for Canary and Green Arrow. As the Doom Patrol falls, the Joker shows himself, laughing at Robotman's dismantled head.

Batman and the Atom are able to subdue Luthor, and, at the same time, the Joker detonates explosive he has planted all over the "safe heaven" built by the villains for hosting the sick and crippled people they have cured. Green Arrow fools the mind-controlled Supergirl, and delivers to John Stewart Hal Jordan's power ring.
The Joker is amused by Brainac's efforts to deal with the Justice League, and the losses being suffered by the villain. Braniac claims to have the situation under control, escaping with the major villains.

The Parasite absorbs some of Black Adam's power, steals Metallo's Kryptonite core, and, with Bizarro's help, plans to strip Superman of his lead armor and kill him. This plan is foiled when Captain Marvel is revealed under "Superman's" armor. Hal Jordan strips off his iron armor and battles Sinestro. Hal reveals that he bears a yellow Qwardian power ring, filtered by a fragment of Blue Kryptonite to disguise its wavelength. He uses the Kryptonite to dispose of Bizarro.

Captain Marvel forces the drained Black Adam to revert into his Teth Adam form and subdues him. Tin stops the weakened Parasite. Green Lantern and Sinestro take their battle in space.

John Stewart uses his power ring to free the Teen Titans and burn off the Brainiac nanotech. In addition, he erases the knowledge of the League members' identies from the villains' minds. Brainiac's control over them is broken.

Gorilla Grodd reveals to J'onn Brainac's plan to deploy the world's weapons of mass destruction. Superman forces Luthor to help the League reach Toyman's stronghold.

Brainiac, holding Arthur Jr. hostage, sends an army of android replicas of himself to battle the League, as Superman calms Aquaman.

Hal Jordan and Sinestro battle in space until the waning energies of their yellow rings cause them to plummet to the ground. John Stewart sends Hal the green ring; Hal saves Sinestro's life.

Scarecrow douses the civilians with his fear gas, sending them into a maddened frenzy against the League.
Superman tears through Toyman's army and discovers that the villain has become part machine. Toyman informs him that Brainiac has control of all the world's nuclear weapons; Superman leaves to stop their detonation. Batman and J'onn gain control over Luthor and Grodd under control; the heroes give Grodd a Green Lantern ring so that he might provide assistance.

Brainiac and Black Manta teleport away, with Superman and Aquaman following their respective trails.

Scarecrow runs into the sewers, and is attacked by the Joker, who wears a Dracula costume.

Cheetah attacks Wonder Woman. Diana removes her armor, displaying her deterioratinig frame: the parts of her body are held together by her magic lasso. Diana takes down the Cheetah, but is dying.

Superman, Red Tornado, and Zatanna pursue Brainiac, but he teleport s from place to place one step ahead of them.

J'onn links Luthor's brain to Grodd's and the three work to redirect the missiles.

Aquaman finds Black Manta and his son, and destroys the machine Manta uses to control his people. Aquaman defeats him and saves his son.

Luthor escapes and teleports to Brainiac; Superman subdues Luthor with the help of Zatanna, whose spell prevents him from teleporting away. They pursue Brainiac. Superman and Zatanna appear in space; Brainiac has shrunk his ship to avoid detection. Superman freezes the ship, wraps Zatanna in his cape, and darts to the earth's surface in order to save her from the vacuum of space. Perfoming CPR, he saves her.

As Hal Jordan's ring runs out of charge, the Green Lantern Corps arrives and gathers up all of the missiles. Hal's ring removes the knowledge of the heroes' secret identities from the minds of the villains.

On Paradise Island, Diana's mother, Queen Hippolyta, prays to the gods to restore life to her daughter. Diana's body fades into the Earth and a new body emerges out of the clay. Diana rises, her life renewed.

Joker and Riddler return to Arkham; Batman reflects on the changes they've made to the world, and opines that perhaps someday the world really will be made into a better place.

The Legion of Super-Heroes watch through time as Superman changes into Clark Kent and heads into the Daily Planet building.
